I’m happy to say I have many CASS colleagues who have had an impact on me. Gary Strother, Bevan Davern, and Andrea Holowka stand out. When I became a Chief Superintendent, I didn’t really want a mentor. I was arrogant enough to think I could do it on my own. However, I didn’t want to confirm my arrogance in the eyes of others, so I agreed to participate. My only request was to pick my mentor. After being hired by Gary Strother into a superintendent role in 2014, he strongly encouraged me to participate fully in CASS. Although I was surrounded by immense superintendent knowledge and experience in my own school division, I did as he suggested and committed to attending mentorship sessions, zone meetings and annual conferences. I quickly learned the value of learning from colleagues from across the province and understanding the commonalities of our challenges as well as gleaning knowledge and processes that were effective in other boards for use in my own practice. After starting my career in British Columbia, I was given the opportunity come to Alberta in 2004 when our current Executive Director, David Keohane hired me as the Principal of a Dual Track French Immersion School with Holy Spirit in Lethbridge. David was just starting his 5-year tenure as Superintendent of Holy Spirit, and I particularly remember how welcome he and his team made me feel at my interview and when I arrived after being hired.
